There are slightly different processes taking place when you see a red or purple hue on a tree

All summer long, the leaves are a nutrient factory for the tree. Chlorophyll absorbs energy from the sun and uses it to turn carbon dioxide and water in carbohydrates, like sugar and starch. Carotenes and xanthophyll are also in there. They have orange and yellow hues, but those colors are blocked out by the vast amount of green chlorophyll.
