It started out a paid game, the transitioned to paid with in-app purchases, and is not free with in-app purchases. There is a campaign mode and an online multiplayer mode that provides a ton of content that should keep gamers busy for a while. There are in-app purchases, but unless you want something game breaking, you can get along just fine without any of them.
